Ulpan

Ulpan means studio, but in Israel it refers to intensive Hebrew language instruction - a crash course for new immigrants. For people who can live off of the sal klita, this course runs for 5 days a week/5 hours a day / for 5 months - approximately 500 hours. If you move to a city with a Communal Aliyah Program (locations change from year to year) you get an extra 200 hours free of charge.

For those of us who didn't arrive debt-free and need to work, ulpan is offered a few nights a week for up to 18 months.

To goal of ulpan is that students learn to speak, read, and write in Hebrew, as well as begin to familiarize themselves with Israeli society.
